If there is one word which characterises the last decade in the universities of Britain, it is change. Education throughout the UK has seen radical reforms under three succesive Conservative administrations; the universities have been the subject of particular attention. For some, the story has been one of reform, as the government has sought to modernise an insular academic system; for others, of different political persuasion, it is a story of retreat from liberal and democratic ambitions as universities have seen their autonomy undermined, and the principle of free or very low cost university education is increasingly diluted.
