Abstract
Machine-intensive industries (e.g. manufacturing industry) strongly depend on their spare parts suppliers to keep their business processes running. This dependency leads to an enormous market power on the side of the suppliers whereby very high margins can be achieved. The application of Additive Manufacturing technologies can reduce the market power of the suppliers. However, 3D-printing is rarely utilized within a company’s spare parts management, because manufacturing companies hardly have any knowledge about the technical and economic possibilities (e.g. reduction of procurement time, integration of functions) of this “new” production process. Therefore, this chapter provides insights into the approach from identifying parts from a stock list (technical and economic characteristics) to the production of a prototype. Moreover, it discusses how 3D-printing can successfully be implemented into an organization’s business process.
