Excerpt

The concept of gradual coastal change can be seen as embracing different contexts, both spatial and temporal. It is conceivable that gradual change may include those depositional and erosional events that have taken millions of years to produce present-day coastal landforms at one end of the spectrum, while at the other end slow and imperceptible accretion to beaches after storms may represent another form of gradual change. Therefore, a wide-ranging time frame may be used covering geological, engineering, and arguably event scales as depicted in Figure C20. This figure demonstrates how high frequency, low magnitude processes at shorter time scales can be superimposed on longer-term oscillations and trends at scales of millennia and longer term as reflected in depositional and erosional land forms.
