The shear behavior of rock foundations is often governed by the network of joints (Barton and Choubey 1977; ICOLD 1993). To estimate the shear strength of rock joints, the Barton and Choubey criterion is one the most commonly used criteria and is recommended by the ISRM (ISRM 1978; Muralha et al. 2014). It is expressed as
$$\tau_{p} = \sigma_{n} \tan \left( {\emptyset_{ r} + {\text{JRC}}*\log \left( {\frac{\text{JCS}}{{\sigma_{n} }}} \right)} \right)$$
