Why is this document necessary? A recent oversight in an biographical entry about me made me realize that no one in my immediate academic environment really knows what my work has been all about “way-back-when,” or “what made me tick.” At this point, most of the members of my guild are two academic generations younger than I am. Seeing how I have fallen prey recently to a terminal disease, it now matters to me, and so I have written this evaluation of my own trajectory as I understand and interpret it myself today. This should enable anyone to write something more meaningful about me than the typical “teaching, research, and service” pro forma accounts. …

Among the latter, for example, is Jacob Mohlamme, now retired from Vista University, earned a PhD with us at Wisconsin. The university had to threaten the Department of Education in Pretoria with retaliation in the US if they did not accept the validity of his degree. In contrast to the “mainstream” his research concerns have obviously been inspired by issues of popular and African elite interest.

They also apparently ignored that I studied social anthropology at University College London successfully for a year so that I might have obtained a PhD degree there. I did not but The Tio Kingdom (1973) has been its equivalent.

These lectures developed into the Kingdoms of the Savanna. Once translated in French Kongo elites in Lower Congo adopted this book so enthusiastically that it inspired the naming of the Church of the Kingdoms of the Savanna, while the book also spread far and wide underground among insurgents in northern Angola.

And indeed only a bare handful of Kuba Geschiedenis, Tervuren 1963 seem ever to have been sold.

Later on I followed their idea and did publish a short local 18th century history that interested many in the DR Congo in the weekly Congo Afrique.

Recently half a dozen general histories by foreign publicists or scholars are again an issue. Whatever their virtues, they cannot but preempt local accounts and thereby impose an outside vision and research agenda, especially with regard to wars in and around the Democratic Republic Congo. For the most flagrant example see David Van Rybrouck Congo: een Geschiedenis (Amsterdam/Antwerpen. De bezige bij, 2010). Translations appeared in French 2014, Italian 2014, and English 2015.
