We are living in perilous times, to state the obvious and perpetually true. Good sociology, however, identifies the ways in which the perils of our times are new and the ways in which ways they are the same as they ever were. By this measure, Linsey McGoey, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex, does some very good sociology in No Such Thing As A Free Gift: The Gates Foundation and The Price of Philanthropy.
