This short essay is an extension of François Furet’s remarkable book The Passing of an Illusion, first published in English in 1999 (in French in 1995). The subtitle of that work, The Idea of Communism in the Twentieth Century, made clear that Furet was intent upon writing not a standard political history of communism as a word-wide political and social movement, but rather something more philosophical and perhaps psychological. He wanted to explore the idea of communism: the nature and evolution of the idea and its attractions throughout the twists and turns of its incarnation in history from 1917 to 1991. Furet sought to elucidate the why’s and how’s of the “spell” of communism: how it worked on the minds and hearts of its adherents. …
