Abstract

The effect mechanisms of Sc and Zr addition on the microstructure of 7075 aluminum alloys in the homogenization process were elucidated. The addition of Sc and Zr remarkably refined the grain size of as-cast 7075 aluminum alloy and the size of the coarse nonequilibrium eutectic phase on the grain boundaries. It led to a relatively small nonequilibrium eutectic phase at the grain boundary of Sc–Zr–7075 alloy that was fully dissolved and the long strip evolved into a sphere shape in the homogenization process. The precipitation behavior of the Al3(Sc,Zr) (size, volume fraction) phase is different in different homogenization processes. The fine and dispersed Al3(Sc,Zr) phase significantly improved the resistance of recrystallization in 7075 aluminum alloy in the subsequent thermal deformation and heat treatment process. The Al3(Sc,Zr) phase was finer and more dispersed in the two-stage homogenization process (400°C/12 h + 465°C/12 h) as compared to the single-stage homogenization process (465°C/16 h).
