Evolution of the Size and Number of Intermetallic Particles in the Production of Sheets and Strips Made of 6016 Grade Aluminum Alloy

Abstract

A study has been performed regarding the evolution of the number and size of intermetallic particles in manufacturing automotive sheet made of 6016 grade aluminum alloy. The production process of 6016 strip has been simulated using industrial and laboratory-scale experiments. After each production step, the number and size of intermetallic particles have been evaluated using electron and optical microscopy. The effect of homogenization temperature exerted on the size and volume of primary and secondary (finely dispersed) particles has been determined. The effect of cold and hot rolling on the crushing of coarse intermetallic particles in the dispersed phase has been demonstrated. For each of the main stages of sheet and strip production, the effect of fine particles on the recrystallization process has been evaluated. It has been found that a significant deceleration of the crystallization is possible only after quenching with natural aging.
