Abstract

The delivery of drugs to different parts of the eye through conventional approaches has been a troublesome task for years, and the urge to overcome the disadvantages of these formulations leads to the discovery of nanosized particle-based ocular formulations that are provided with numerous advantages over the previous attempts. Medical applications of nanotechnology, from disease diagnosis to treatment, have been extensively studied. Nanosuspensions, Several Nanoparticles, Nanomicelles, Nanowafers, and Microemulsions, etc., are supplied with several benefits like improved bioavailability, ease of delivery, help the patients to comply with the dosing regimen, and reach sufficient concentration at the action site. Biodegradable polymers provide enhanced retention time, increased bioavailability, and regulated release through mucoadhesion to the epithelia in the eye, among other advantageous qualities. This review emphasizes on the different nano-formulations applied to the field of pharmacy for successful delivery of ophthalmic preparations.
