Fostering the creation of academic spinoffs: does the international mobility of the academic leader matter?

Abstract

The impact of the academic leaders on the university’s entrepreneurial orientation has received only anecdotal attention, though they are recognized to be important for the flow and transfer of knowledge as they have a pivotal role in setting the strategic goals of their institutions. Our study addresses this gap by investigating the role of university leaders in fostering the creation of academic spinoffs. Particularly we focus on the impact of university leader’s international mobility. Through a longitudinal study of 1176 spinoffs from 59 Italian state universities over the period 2001 and 2015, we find that the mobility of university leaders positively affects the rate of establishment of academic spinoffs. Rectors that experienced international mobility in their career develop networks and collaborations that facilitate the business involvement of their institutions. These positive externalities are larger in internationalized universities as well as in international-oriented regions. The research contributions on human capital theory, social network literature, international academic mobility, and knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship are discussed.

Similar to most continental European HE systems, Italian HE comprises a large majority of public institutions.

From the name of the Minister of Education, University and Research in office at the time of approval. The law is officially titled: ‘Norme in materia di organizzazione delle Università, di personale accademico e reclutamento, nonché delega al Governo per incentivare la qualità e l’efficienza del sistema universitario’.

They are called ‘schools of advanced studies’ and are IMT Lucca, Pisa Sant’Anna, Pisa Normale, IUSS Pavia, SU Firenze, and SISSA Trieste.

This database is managed by the MIUR in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Marche and the Schools of advanced studies Pisa Sant’Anna. It is available at www.spinoffricerca.it.

International co-authored publications are defined as those co-authored by at least two scholars from different countries in the SciVal database. SviVal is Elsevier’s database of peer-reviewed literature, which guarantees an extensive coverage of research output for most scientific disciplines.

We refer to the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), a geocode standard for referencing the subdivisions of countries for statistical purposes developed by the European Union. For each EU member country, a hierarchy of three NUTS levels is established by Eurostat. Our set of dummy variables is based on the NUTS-1 coding, which identifies 5 macro-areas in Italy.

The variation explained with the model is measured by the generalized R-squared (Pesaran and Smith 1994).
