The consortium "Closed Carbon Cycle Mobility" (C³-Mobility) aims to develop and demonstrate new ways toward zero-CO₂ mobility in the future using synthetic fuels based on methanol. Synthetic fuels are an attractive solution for CO₂ reduction, especially for long-haul operation and freight transport. In addition to the direct use of methanol as a pure fuel, mixtures of methanol, ethanol, 2-butanol, iso-butanol and conventional fuels will also be considered as alternative fuels for combustion engines. At the Institute for Combustion Engines at RWTH Aachen University these fuel mixtures and pure alcohols were investigated with regard to their efficiency increase potential and pollutant emissions reduction potential in a spark-ignition single cylinder research engine. …
