Abstract

The past two decades have been characterized on a worldwide scale as “the age of migration.” This chapter centers on journeys by undocumented migrants in the context of the recently increased border surveillance between Mexico and the USA. The three films discussed are T. Lee Jones’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005), R. Perezcano’s Norteado (2009), and D. Díez Quemada’s La jaula de oro (2013). While being inspired by real events, the films also draw on the recourses of fiction (and in particular of popular genres, such as the Western) to save the migrant from stereotypical “victimization” and restore to him/her a dimension of agency.
