Journalists are very busy people. They can also be very rude, particularly to Public Relations people who phone them up and ramble on about things that are of no interest to them. So why bother to phone journalists? Why not just send them the press release and hope? Well, first because many journalists do not like press releases — some receive literally hundreds a day. Second, stories are about people, not pieces of paper. You cannot develop a relationship with a journalist if you never speak to them. And of course sometimes there is just no time to write and send out a press release. Even if you do send a release you may need to follow it up with a phone call.
