These days, the knives are out for the internal combustion engine and diesel engines in particular. Many manufacturers see electric mobility as the only way out. However, 25 professors from Switzerland, Germany and Austria have nailed their colors to the mast in supporting the internal combustion engine in a position paper published by the Scientific Society for Automotive and Engine Technology (WKM). In an interview with MTZ, Prof. Stefan Pischinger, President and CEO of the FEV Group, assesses the present status of electric mobility, the future of the diesel engine, and the importance of alternative drives and fuels.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger was born on May 21, 1961, in Graz, Austria. He completed his degree in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in 1985. Between 1985 and 1989, he worked as a research assistant at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory, M.I.T. After completing his PhD in 1989, he worked on the development of diesel and gasoline engines at Daimler-Benz until 1997. Since then, he has been Director of the Institute of Thermodynamics at RWTH Aachen University and Head of the Institute for Combustion Engines. At the same time he was appointed to the FEV Management Board in Aachen in 1997 and has been President and CEO there since April 2003.
