Integrated Application of Rice Husk Biochar and ZnO-NPs Improves Yield Components, Yield and Nutrient Uptake in Grain of Rice Under Different Nitrogen Fertilizer Levels

Abstract

The simultaneous application of the biochar (BC) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) as a modern technology in combination with nitrogen (N) fertilizer can help to improve the nutrient uptake and increase rice yield. The present study aimed to evaluate the impacts of rice husk BC and ZnO-NPs on yield components, yield and nutrient uptake in grain of rice under different N fertilizer levels. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The experimental treatments included the main plot assigned to different N doses (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha−1), and the sub-plot assigned to applications of BC and Zn (control, BC, ZnO-NPs, and BC + ZnO-NPs). The results showed that the application of N at a dose of 100 kg ha−1 improved the yield components, especially the number of fertile tillers hill−1 (16.35 tillers) and finally grain yield (4599 kg ha−1). The highest concentrations of N and Zn in grain were obtained by applying the greatest amounts of N fertilizer. Although separate application of both BC and ZnO-NPs improved rice yield and quality compared to the control, the highest grain yield and greatest nutrient uptake was achieved by the co-application of BC and ZnO-NPs. Application of N at a dose of 100 kg ha−1 in combination with BC and ZnO-NPs caused a significant increase in grain yield compared to other experimental treatments. Overall, the results showed that the combined application of BC + ZnO-NPs along with 100 kg N ha−1 is suggested for rice farmers in the study area.
