Meta-regulation is a topic that is increasingly important to understand and implement, as our economies become both more globalized and more interconnected. Meta-regulation has been defined as “regulation for self-regulation,” involving audits, safety programs, and stakeholder oversight (Simon, p. 2–3). This definition of meta-regulation focuses on the roles of rationality and morality, or normative controls, to ensure economies and markets are operating in a way that upholds the public interest. However, the reliance on normative controls presents distinct issues with describing ‘effective’ meta-regulation, how this could be measured, and the mechanisms to achieve this. …
