Abstract

In the previous chapter, we looked at ecosystem management by platform firms at the macroscopic level (industry structure), using the example of Intel. This leading platform firm is a semiconductor manufacturer, but it also designs the architecture of the overall personal computer and attracts symbiont firms into its ecosystem.

Since CPUs are expensive, motherboard suppliers do not make purchases directly from Intel. Instead, PC manufacturers buy CPUs from Intel and install them onto the motherboards when they assemble their PCs. The chipsets reach the motherboard vendors following two different paths: either the motherboard suppliers purchase them directly or the PC manufacturers make purchases and lend them to the motherboard suppliers. In both cases, the chipsets are designed by the motherboard suppliers, installed along the motherboard production line and delivered to PC manufacturers already on the motherboards.

2
Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) subcontractors make products under the brand names of their customers. Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) subcontractors design and make products under the brand names of their customers. The difference lies in whether, on top of manufacturing, the subcontractors also design the products (Kawakami 2012).

3
DIY stands for Do-It-Yourself. It is a market for end users who build personal computers by assembling purchased components.

4
After 2000, small capitalized enterprises, like Company D, have decreased in number due to competition, so that now the Taiwanese motherboard industry mostly features firms like Companies A–C. From the mid-1990s to around 2000, however, there were many firms like Company D in the industry.

5
This problem applied not only to hardware but also to the BIOS software that Intel recommended in its reference design. The vendor of the recommended BIOS was American, but Taiwanese motherboard suppliers often used BIOS products developed by other third parties for cost-cutting purposes.
