Abstract

Drawing on insights from evolutionary psychology and modern neuroscience, this paper highlights propositions about human nature that have far reaching consequences, when applied to leadership. We specifically examine the main factors of human survival and extend them to a model for leadership in the twenty-first century. The discussion concludes with an outlook on the organizational and structural conditions that would allow for better and more balanced leadership.

While we acknowledge other theories of leadership, many remain unclear about their respective theoretical underpinning regarding the nature of human beings. For a discussion of the various models of human nature (see Mintzberg et al. 2002; Jensen and Meckling 1994).

The term satisfice, coined by the economist, psychologist, and political scientist Herbert Simon (1916–2001), is a combination of satisfy and suffice. Simon proposed that, in many circumstances, an optimal solution is either too difficult or too costly to determine, typically because there are too many competing criteria, in which case the goal should be a solution that meets certain thresholds for all criteria and is therefore “good enough.” This concept is essential for understanding how the brain works.
