The terms standardization and standard setting have different meanings: standardization specifically refers to a combination of standard setting and standard diffusion. Nevertheless, the two expressions are often used interchangeably in scientific studies. Typically, European studies employ the term standardization, whereas US studies prefer standard setting. This is most likely because Europeans think of standards as de jure standards, while Americans think of them as de facto standards.
