Analysis of Motion Blur on Spatial OFDM Based Pixelated Optical Communication Systems

Abstract

This paper, for the first time, analyses the impact of motion blur in the context of a spatial orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (spatial OFDM) based pixelated optical wireless communication system. The analysis is then extended to express the combined effects of motion blur and other impairments including defocus blur, misalignment, and vignetting. It is analytically shown that the impact of motion blur is to attenuate and to phase shift the spatial OFDM subcarriers, where the attenuation depends on the subcarrier index of spatial OFDM and the motion length. It is further shown that for the case of horizontal or vertical motion blur, the attenuation is the greatest at subcarriers that are integer multiples of the ratio of the subcarrier number to the motion length. Simulation results show that the bit error rate performance degradation of spatial OFDM can be reduced when the highly attenuated subcarriers are not used for data transmission. Next, the impact of motion blur is evaluated for different forms of spatial OFDM including spatial asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM, spatial DC-biased optical OFDM, spatial LED index modulation OFDM and spatial non-DC biased OFDM (SNDC-OFDM). Results indicate that SNDC-OFDM exhibits the best optical power efficiency in the presence of motion blur.
