The Arab world has remained a stubborn resister to the world-wide trend toward democratization. As such it is an ideal site to explore the political dynamics behind authoritarian resilience. This is the objective of Debating Arab authoritarianism, Oliver Schlumberger’s new edited book that aims to look ‘beyond coercion and culture’ to explain the persistence of authoritarianism in the Arab world.
