The Italian company Brembo has launched an ECS (electromechanical combined sliding) brake calliper made entirely of aluminium. The gear motor developed by Brembo and located inside the calliper body combines the functions of a service brake and a parking brake. In addition, the manufacturer has improved the friction material. Brembo has also developed monitoring software that activates a dynamic braking function. In the event that both of the calliper’s hydraulic circuits fail, the driver can stop the car by using the parking brake. The calliper is also equipped with the hot-brake reclamp function. When the vehicle is parked on a slope, the software automatically activates the calliper to counteract the thermal deformation of the discs and pads. This prevents the car from rolling on steep slopes when the ambient temperature is high. The use of aluminium for the calliper body and the bracket reduces the unsprung mass by 1.25 kg compared with an equivalent cast iron floating calliper. The total weight saving is therefore 2.5 kg for the rear axle. The brakes will be used for the first time in the new Alpine A110.
