The obvious advantage of fuel cell cars is their lack of emissions. Therefore, the drivers fill the cars with hydrogen at fuel stations. One important consideration is the quality of the hydrogen. Professor Andreas Schütze (figure right, here with Donatella Puglisi from Linköpings Universitet) and his team of researchers from Saarland University have created an innovative sensor system to ensure the quality and purity of the hydrogen. The engineers developed the process, which will continuously monitor the hydrogen for impurities as it is being supplied by the fuel pump, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), the Zentrum für Mechatronik und Automatisierungstechnik, and Hydac Electronic. The oil and gas company Shell is also involved in the project. …
