Abstract

The Schiff base (SB)-Cu complexes were prepared between various diamines and aldehydes. The structural and morphological analysis was performed using FT-IR, ESR and HR-TEM. Further, its catalytic activity towards the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL) was performed at 160 °C for 2 h under N2 environment. The ring opening (RO) activity of different SB-Cu complexes was done at different ratios of [M/I]. The increase in FT-IR relative intensity of A1726/725 confirmed the SB-Cu complex initiated the ROP of CL. The RO activity of SB-Cu complex based initiators was compared based on Tm, Td, Mw and % yield. The Mw of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) increased linearly with the ratios of [M/I]. While changing the nature of SB structure, the porous structure of PCL was slightly modified. The 1H-NMR spectra confirmed the chemical structure of PCL. Finally, the RO activity of the SB-Cu complex towards CL was confirmed by anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities.
