A series of nine papers have been assembled on the subject of technology roadmapping to consider the “transition from sustaining to disruptive technologies.” Technology roadmapping is a flexible technique that permits industrial strategic and long-range planners to explore the evolution and development of markets for new products and technologies over time. Such roadmaps offer perspectives on integrating new technology with business planning, with an eye to assessing the impact of new technologies and their developing markets. Disruptive innovation is the replacement of old technologies with new (disruptive) ones. This focus on disruptive technology may be useful to our interest in promoting clean technology and may provide a collection of new tools to help accomplish the development within a corporate context. Stakeholders consider the environmental landscape related to a new technology development as an important feature among others for a new technology. In their technology evaluation scheme, technology developers need to consider a criterion that is focused on environmentally sustainable technology as a desirable and critical objective in current global society. Another paper offers a well-developed framework to address the purpose, format, and use of these planning instruments. For instance, there are eight types of roadmaps related to the intended purpose of a new technology: product planning, service/capability planning, strategic planning, long-range planning, knowledge asset planning, program planning, process planning, and integration planning. …
