The Effect of Addition of SiO2 on the Mechanical Properties of PBO-Fiber-Filled HDPE Composites

Abstract

The mechanical properties of poly (p-phenilene benzobisoxazole) PBO-fiber and SiO2-filled thermoplastic HDPE composites were studied with a particular interest in the effects of filler content and fiber surface treatment by a coupling agent. Surface-treated PBO-fiber-filled HDPE composites exhibited increased tensile, flexural, and impact strengths, which increased still further with addition of SiO2. The SEM showed a higher degree dispersion of filler in the matrix of the coupling-agent-treated PBO-HDPE composites, which resulted in a better interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix.
