Abstract

The development of Arctic science in 1980–2020 is analyzed. The sources of raw information are the bibliographic databases of the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and the grant databases of the National Science Foundation of the United States and the Russian Science Foundation. The subject domains in the spotlight are worldwide scientific output indicators, indicators of countries and groups of countries, and of leading organizations; theme-based structures of the studies; scientific cooperation and citation rate indicators; and the number of Arctic projects launched annually by the science foundations of Russia and the United States. The Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus are compared according to the main parameters of Arctic science. The main topics of the Arctic projects launched in the United States and Russia in 2022 are identified with the help of grant abstracts.

Legal successor to the United Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Study of the Arctic and Antarctic (1992–1999).

Two works by Russian authors relied on domestic databases, including Russian Scientific Citation Index [13] and Scientific Siberica of the State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the RAS [17].

For example, in winter, the Arctic can be proxy to the glacial satellites of Jupiter and Saturn [1].

4
Denmark is considered together with Greenland, and pre-1992 Russia is considered as the Soviet Union.

5
The specialization index (SI) compares the share of some country in a specific domain of science with its share in science in general. SI >1 (1 is the average global value) means that the country specializes in this domain.

6
The highly cited papers indicator [26] for the segment of top‑1% is determined as HCPItop-1% ≡ PPtop-1% /1%, where PPtop-1% is the share of highly cited papers in the aggregate output of special issue materials of a specific country (observed value); 1% is the share of these papers in the global output (expected value). As defined, if this proportion exceeds 1, a specific country is a better producer of highly cited (in the segment of top-1%) publications than the rest of the world and vice versa.

The search was done on the websites of the foundations (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/ and https://www.rscf.ru/ project/); in the first case, the keyword for the search was “arctic”, in the second case, two words were used, including “арктик*” and “арктич*”.
