Infiniti has unveiled the new QX50 SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show. There is a technical innovation at work under the bonnet: the first production petrol engine with variable compression.

The 2-litre turbocharged engine with 200 kW (272 hp) of power was already showcased at the Paris Motor Show last year and is now going into production with the mid-range SUV. The variable compression ratio (VCR) is designed to be able to vary the compression ratio during operation. Infiniti’s VC-Turbo engine achieves this using a multi-link system that allows any compression ratio between 8:1 (high performance) and 14:1 (high efficiency). The four-cylinder petrol engine with a torque of 380 newton meters is therefore expected to achieve the efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine and consume 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

The Infiniti QX50 is built on a new platform and delivers its power to the front wheels via a CVT transmission with eight simulated steps, and four-wheel drive is also available. The Propilot driving assistance system includes active lane keeping, intelligent speed control with distance control and pedestrian detection in the event of emergency braking.
