Comparative study of free vibration characteristics of flexible kinked cantilever robotic arm

Abstract

In this work, the free vibration properties of a flexible kinked cantilever beam are explored experimentally as well as numerically. In numerical analysis, governing equation is derived considering the link as an Euler–Bernoulli beam. Natural frequencies of different mode shapes are analysed by varying tip mass (mt), kink angle (δ) and kink position lengths (L1, L2). The results show that the kink angle has a prominent effect on the vibration characteristics of a kinked cantilever beam. Also, with the increment of tip mass, the vibration of the beam gets reduced with obvious decrease of natural frequencies but with different trends in comparison to straight beam. Varying one portion of kink length L1, keeping other portion length L2 constant and vice-versa with constant kink angle (δ), gives interesting natural frequencies variation trends in different mode shapes. Natural frequencies of a system are important to predict its dynamic behaviour under different excitation.
