Zusammenfassung

Unter Generosität versteht man vorrangig die Bereitschaft zum Teilen materieller Güter, wobei der Aspekt der „Freiheit im Geben“, also mehr von etwas zu geben, als erwartet, bedeutsam ist. Erfasst wird Generosität größtenteils in Simulationsspielen und mithilfe von Fragebögen. Wichtige Voraussetzungen für Generosität sind Empathievermögen sowie Sozialisierungsprozesse. Von der materiellen Generosität ist „Generosity of Spirit“ (sogenannte „Seelengröße“) zu unterscheiden, die unter anderem Liebenswürdigkeit, Unvoreingenommenheit sowie den Glauben an das Gute im Menschen beinhaltet. Den Antiwert zur materiellen Generosität bildet Geiz im Sinne übertriebener Sparsamkeit. Schwierigkeiten zeigen sich bei der Identifikation eines Antiwertes zur Seelengröße, da hier jegliches unmenschliche Verhalten infrage kommt. Offene Fragen ergeben sich außerdem hinsichtlich der Beziehung zwischen materieller Generosität und „Generosity of Spirit“, sowie der Förderung von Seelengröße in der Gesellschaft.
