In Mongolia and beyond, conservation scientists have failed society

The title is not intended to be incendiary or a mere provocative tool to lure readers. It states a fact. Over 35 years ago, Soulé (1985) cogently documented the “frenzy” by which humans were destroying biodiversity and lamented the likely loss of millions of species within our lifetimes (p. 733). But Soulé (1985) also found comfort in conservation science. As originally conceived and refurbished through the years, conservation science represented a “crisis discipline” (Soulé 1985). Its purpose was to provide a cadre of scientists capable of effectively addressing conservation threats (Kareiva and Marvier 2012), thus allowing humans to “modify significantly the rate at which biotic diversity is destroyed” (Soulé 1985, p. 733). …
