Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) reintroduction efforts during the second half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century helped to recover this apex predator to several mountain areas in Western and Central Europe (Chapron et al. 2014). Many projects were unsuccessful due to the low number of founders, lack of involvement of local stakeholders, and/or missing international coordination (Linnell et al. 2009). Several reintroductions led to the successful creation of populations; however, these are still threatened by isolation, genetic erosion, and illegal killing (e.g., Kaczensky et al. 2013). A few of them are now in critical status and need further urgent support (e.g., Dinaric population; Sindičić et al. 2013). …
