It is now argued by critical scholars of technology across disciplines that technological devices and socio-technical systems reproduce white supremacy and racism (e.g., Benjamin, 2022; Eubanks, 2018; Noble, 2018). But what does this mean for educational technology? Simply put, educational technologies and systems are no different (e.g., Eglash et al., 2021; Yadav et al., 2022; Watters, 2021). Thus, technologists and researchers need to challenge their own assumptions that technological devices and socio-technical systems are value-free and neutral when it comes to their design and use. This is especially the case given that since at least the 1980s it has been argued that artifacts have politics, including those that are racialized (Strate, 2012; Winner, 1980). …
