Abstract

The iron ore tailing (IOT) is an industrial waste, in which large accumulations represent a serious environmental threat. To reduce the environmental burden and improve the economic benefits, the science and industry focus on the transformation of IOT into new functional materials. In this study, the zeolite A was synthesized from IOT without acid leaching purification. The IOT and zeolite A were studied by XRD, XRF, XPS, SEM, and simply BET. As a result of the hydrothermal reaction, zeolite A was synthesized from the IOT. It was shown that the experimental conditions (SiO2/Al2O3, Na2O/SiO2, and H2O/Na2O) have a significant influence on the type of zeolite and its content in the synthetic products. The calcium ion-exchange capacity and the BET surface area of zeolite A product closely similar to that of the commercial 4A zeolite and superior to the zeolite A synthesized by traditional method discussed in this paper. The research result indicates that the zeolite A can be prepared from IOT and it can be reduce calcium ion as water softener.
