Corrosion behavior of ZrO2–TiO2 nanocomposite thin films coating on stainless steel through sol–gel method

Abstract

Ceramic film has attracted a lot of attention in the last few decades due to its wear resistance, corrosion resistance and resistance to high temperature. This paper describes the characterization of preparing of zirconia (ZrO2)–titania (TiO2) composite films on the stainless steel through a method of dip-coating in sol–gel solution. The samples were sintered at four different temperatures. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The corrosion protection behavior of the ZrO2–TiO2 coated samples immersed in 5 wt% of NaCl solution were evaluated through Tafel polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The thickness (measured by GD-OES) of the resulting coatings was about 70 nm.
