MBEC is the official journal of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering, IFMBE, and can proudly look back on 45 years of publication. In 2006, important changes were implemented for MBEC. A new editorial team took office, Springer became the publisher, the publication frequency doubled, and we switched to a fully web-based manuscript handling system, facilitating online submission and exchange with reviewers. Through the combined efforts of the IFMBE and Springer in implementing and promoting the innovations, the number of submissions grew substantially in 2006, allowing the editors to meet the increased number of papers to be published while at the same time raising the reviewers’ threshold for accepting manuscripts. This resulted in a healthy acceptance rate of 30%. These developments are good for the journal and will help to increase its impact over time. …
