Books on Econometrics are a dime a dozen, and it is said that if you have read one, you have read all of them. Given that, most frontier books on Econometrics have a specific target group. Some cater to the novice undergraduate learners (e.g. Gujarati 2004; Stock and Watson 2015, among others) while some are aimed at advanced learners wanting to master specialised topics (e.g. Maddala 2008; Hamilton 1994; or Baltagi 2020). In recent times, a few books have also come out that are professed to be useful to researchers and practitioners who want to apply econometric techniques in their empirical research. This latter group of books pays more attention to real life problems and prescribes appropriate econometric tools to tackle those issues. More often than not, they are written in association with one or other of mainstream econometric softwares (e.g. Landau and Everitt 2004; Baum 2006; Bhaumik 2016). Econometrics in Theory and Practice by Panchanan Das is the new kid on the block in this genre. The author, with a vast experience of teaching econometrics and equally long experience of empirical research, has written the book, which aims at, according to the preface, “….graduate and post-graduate students in universities in India and abroad and researchers in the social sciences, business, management, operations research, engineering or applied mathematics.” That is a tall order indeed! This trying to please everyone, so to speak, is both a strength and weakness of the book. …
