Alternative drive systems for commercial vehicles have to prove themselves not only in the context of increasingly stringent emissions regulations, but also with regard to their cost-effectiveness. For that reason, different energy converters are used for different applications. Hydrogen is relevant as a source of energy for achieving CO2 neutrality. Stephan Schnorpfeil, Technology Leader Fuel Cell at Segula Technologies, describes the progress in the development of the fuel cell to series production readiness and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of other types of drive systems.
Dr.-Ing. Stephan Schnorpfeil (born in 1981) studied mechanical engineering at TU Kaiserslautern from 2001 to 2007. He went on to complete his doctorate at the RWTH Aachen University on the subject of Variable Compressor Pre Swirl Devices in Combustion Engines. He then worked for FEV as a specialist in the field of gasoline engine calibration and software development, before moving to Opel in Rüsselsheim in 2014, where he built up and expanded his expertise in the field of advance development for gasoline engines. Since September 2019, Schnorpfeil has worked for the development service provider Segula Technologies in Germany, where he and his team focus on the entire development process of fuel cells and fuel cell systems - from simulation, software development, and testing on the company's own test benches to calibration, integration, validation, and type testing.
